The McCormick View reviews 'Our Black Year' by Maggie Anderson (with Ted Gregory). The book is about Ms. Anderson's experiment to buy everything for their household from Black-owned businesses - only. The challenges and surprises she and her family discover during that year are enlightening.
Her experience and experiment, however, raise a more troubling question? What is the state of Black business in America? Why are there so few of the small businesses that sustain a community (dry cleaners, coffee houses, car washes, grocery stores, etc.) owned by African Americans? Why does a dollar spent in the Black community only stay in the Black community for only 6 hours, versus 28 days for other ethnicities?
This review asks those questions and we'll explore the issue further - in future editions of: The McCormick View.
